Professor Jun-Hyeok Kwak (Department of Philosophy, Sun Yat-Sen University) offered three lectures in 17th, 18th and 19th of January, titled ‘Reappraisals of New Republicanism in East Asia Context’. The Korean professor working in a famous Chinese university has been developing republican political thought that treats liberty as non-domination in Philip Pettit’s manner, not in Aristotelian and Skinnerian manners. In the lecture series, he began discussing classical political philosophers, such as Aristotle and Cicero, examined Machiavelli’s texts (The Prince and Discourses on Livy) and compared his republican patriotism with communitarianism, nationalism, populism, etc. Many scholars and graduate students at Waseda University discussed his understanding of a variety of republicanism, the methodology of the history of political thought and, in particular, the problem of how to apply his Machiavellian republicanism in the East Asia countries, in which the republican tradition has not been the basis for their political and cultural identities. He clarified two principles for peaceful coexistence in East Asia: reciprocal non-domination and non-ethnocentric discursive stance. The former will guide thinking in the ongoing process of reconciliation, and the latter will encourage people to follow the outcomes of discussion. Professor Umemori commented that Professor Kwak’s talks were very interesting for non-specialists as well as historians of political thought to understand the notions behind our political systems.
