The Global Asia Research Center presents a public workshop:

Title: Japan, China, and India: Trilateral Competition or Cooperation over Maldives, a keystone of Indian Ocean

Abstract:

For the past five years or so, under the rubric of the Belt and Road Initiative, China has been very active in investing infrastructure in Maldives which is an atoll state located in Indian Ocean. Due to its strategic location, not only China but also Japan is now keenly interested in supporting Maldives under its Free and Open Indo-Pacific Initiative, in addition to traditional partners and neighbors of Maldives such as India and Sri Lanka. In Maldives, so-called ‘development aid’ can be misused and exacerbate political tensions between the political rivalry in a small country. In the workshop, scholars who have just visited Maldives and scholars from India are going to discuss the prospect of competition and cooperation among three big donors (China, India and Japan) in
the maritime security and economic development of Maldives.
