On November 6, 2019, the Global Asia Research Center at Waseda University held a public seminar called “Operating Integrated Resort Casinos: What The Indian Gaming Model Can Give Japan.” Earlier this July, Dr. Marquez gave a presentation at the research center on the historical background of American Indians and how business activities have enhanced their living standards. Following his discussion on the current situation of the tribal gaming industries, Dr. Marquez shared some of the practices of this industry, with suggests on lessons Japan could take when establishing its own integrated resort casino gaming operations in the years to come.

First, Dr. Marquez analyzed the practices and strategies that have served tribal casinos well over the past three decades, as well as the legislation that governs gambling on Indian lands. He then addressed how casino revenues would benefit the education, health care and culture of the community. He concentrated on troubling topics such as the disparity in graduation rate and suicide rate of young American Indians, the low birth rate, and the high death rate.

Lastly, scholars and students actively engaged in a lively discussion. Cultural and social questions were asked about how American Indians preserved their languages and culture. Furthermore, the participants talked about the U.S. education system’s representation of American Indians. There was also discussion about the possible impact of the 2020 U.S. presidential election on the industry.
